The study of health and bodywork has been a life-long passion.
I began my massage training in January 2000 with Toshiko Phipps in Putney, Vermont. This 500 hour program in Integrative Eclectic Shiatsu focused on a blend of eastern Shiatsu therapy with Western Swedish and Sports Massage.
Following massage therapy school and Adventure Education training, I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Health Sciences (pre-physical therapy emphasis) with a minor in Biology from Russell Sage College in Troy, New York. As a student, I worked as a teacher’s assistant for the Anatomy and Physiology lab at Russell Sage. I additionally worked as a research assistant at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Lighting Research Center, studying melatonin suppression and nighttime alertness.
I moved to Crested Butte, Colorado in May 2009 to attend an 850 hour program at the Mountain Heart School of Bodywork and Transformational Therapy. At Mountain Heart School I grew my study of modalities in Acupressure, Deep Tissue, Swedish, Hot Stone Therapy, Sports Massage, Neuromuscular Therapy, Spa Therapy, TMJ/jaw massage, and Somatic Mind/Body Therapy. I started Crested Butte Mobile Massage in 2010 and ran a one-room studio as Karen Kubarek Massage Therapy through the fall of 2015.
After years of practicing yoga, I received my 200-hour yoga teacher certificate in Shiva Rea’s Prana Vinyasa Flow with Monica Mesa and guest teachers at Yoga for the Peaceful in Crested Butte, Colorado, plus 20 hours of Yoga and Ayurveda training with Maria Garre and Yoginos: Yoga for Youth (module 1) with Dr. Beth Reese and Meredith Paterson. To bridge the practices of yoga and acupressure, I completed a 38-hour Marma Point Therapy training with Dr. Vasant Lad at the Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
I moved to Santa Barbara in October 2015, where I continued practicing at Le Reve Organic Spa & Boutique and worked at a biomechanics laboratory specializing in shoe performance research.
I moved to Morro Bay in December 2017 and proud to be working with Morro Bay Massage & Bodywork on Main Street. I have experience working with a wide variety of clients including children, the elderly, skiers, snowboarders, hikers, road and mountain bikers, yogis, runners, musicians, celebrities, those with TMJ/jaw pain and headaches, and post-trauma.
Outside of the studio I enjoy hiking, biking, backpacking, surfing, kayaking, playing ball with my dog, volunteering with The Marine Mammal Center and Yes We Can Peacebuilders, serving as the Head of the Litter Brigade for Morro Bay Beautiful, participating in beach and trash clean ups, reading, and continuing to learn about bodywork, wellness, and the marvels of nature.
My wish for the world is to see healthier, happier people who are more content, more confident, less stressed, and less violent. I believe that if we are all kinder to ourselves, we will in turn be more compassionate towards each other, animals, and the environment.
